Bastet is the goddess of fun, happiness and comfort in ancient Egypt. The center of her worship was the city of Bubasta near Zagazig in the Delta, and it is now the city of Tell Basta. The goddess Bubastet was depicted in the form of a woman with a cat’s head, holding in one hand the goddess Hathor’s snoring, and in the other hand carrying a basket. It is also sometimes depicted as a cat.
The beginning of the appearance of “Bastet” in Egyptian sources dates back to the era of the beginning of the dynasties, where some pots and pans were found on which the name of the deity “Bastet” was recorded in the regions of “Saqqara” and “Abydos”.
She appears as a benevolent mother and educator of the king in the Pyramid Texts and is associated with providing the deceased with protection in the “Coffin Texts” of the Middle Kingdom. However, her fierce nature remained, like most goddesses, in the form of a lioness.
She was seen as the daughter of Ra and the “eye of Ra”. It was also associated with the moon, as the “eye of the moon”. And her relationship with the idol “Ra” continued, even when she was depicted in the form of a cat. Therefore, it was known as (the “cat of Ra”, which destroys the serpent, the enemy of the sun god). Bastet has held many titles, including: (Lady of the Two Lands, Lady of the Lords, Lady of Heaven, Peaceful Eye of Ra, and Eye of Atum). She was also called (Lady “Basta”) in connection with her place of worship, a title that remained present in the texts until the end of the ancient Egyptian history of the gods Bastet, a clear relationship with the gods Sekhmet, despite the contradictory characteristics of each of them. It represents meekness, pity and mercy.
The Egyptians felt this difference, and they spoke of Bastet as a friendly person, and of Sekhmet as a fearful person. Armaan also believes that the similarity between the gods Sekhmet and the gods Bastet is a similarity in the external appearance and not a similarity in the attributes, and the face of the external similarity is that the gods Bastet are sometimes represented in the same image as the gods Sekhmet. François Dumas believes that the gods Bastet, who represents meekness, can transform in an instant into the terrible, bloodthirsty Sekhmet.
